By racer48 | February 24, 2009
You’d better think again if you think the text on your website isn’t important! A very important aspect of your website is the copy. If you have a nonprofessional website copy then you shouldn’t expect high-quality success. It won’t even matter if you have good graphics and excellent products unless you have awesome copy. If you’re somebody that’s trying to sell products using a website then that’s not good news. How are you going to make any sales if the visitors won’t stick around long enough?
You need to get the customers’ attention when they first come to your site or they could be gone forever. In order to keep them reading you must grab their attention right away. Once you’ve got them there, you want to keep them interested so they’ll stay.
Potential customers are usually searching for information about a certain topic. They will rapidly browse your material and observe your site, to see if it has the information they came looking for. You could lose a sale if you don’t get their attention right away.
If your website has badly written web copy it’s doomed to fail. Those that do fail usually use the following mistakes: boring text, provide information not related to their website topic, fancy or small style fonts, and or contain several spelling errors. These may give you an idea of how bad copy can hurt your business, since there are a lot more mistakes you could make concerning your copy. If you build your website with XSitePro, you may be ahead of the curve as this software has a built in spell checker, SEO and much more.
Think like your visitor. What copy would you want to see on the site, if you were looking to buy the same products that you currently plan to offer? Would you like unrelated material to read or something that makes you want to read more about it and grabs your attention?
Most likely you will want something that gets your attention. You can accomplish this by… You always need to think who your target audience is. What don’t they like? Know your customers. Now give the visitor something they enjoy reading.
Let’s say, your target market is moms who raise young children, for an example. They’re not going to want to read lots of text since they have young children and are busy. They most likely will skim through information and pick out pieces of text that seem to relate to them. Would they want to read text that’s made for scientists? I don’t think so! You don’t want them to leave your site so you shouldn’t use a lot of confusing words.
If you use easy to understand words they will want to read more. The text on your site is very important. It gets the visitors attensionand keeps them there. By using poor copy you are losing customers and potential sales. Provide them with what they would like to read and enjoy the profits you could make from them.
