College For Single Parents Allows For Life Changing And Lifelong Learning

    By racer48 | July 27, 2010

Many adults in this recession are returning to school to train for new careers or to acquire new skills. College for parents can be particularly important in terms of setting a good example. Parents who continue their education through online degree these days are teaching their children that, in this Information age particularly, lifelong learning isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity.

A May article in the Press Republican noted that workplaces are very competitive and technological and are changing fast. With the demands of a busy career and home life, many parents might feel that attending school is another chore. However, online degree programs can help make college for parents a reality. Many institutions offer programs geared specifically to lifelong learning.

Many online graduate programs offer a variety of programs geared specifically to lifelong learning. Executives are attending a Georgia institution to build upon math and business skills they learned while working toward their master’s degrees, according to a recent article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Still other lifelong learning programs are intended simply for the joy of learning. The Bernard Osher Foundation has Lifelong Learning Institutes on the campuses of more than 100 colleges and universities throughout the United States that offer non-credit classes designed for “seasoned” adults.

A “32 Trends in Distance Learning” report, quoting American writer and futurist Alvin Toffler, noted that 21st century illiteracy isn’t going to have to do with an inability to read and write. It’s going to have to do with an inability to learn, unlearn and relearn. The report also noted that employers as of 2003 were beginning to consider employee training a good investment. Wal-Mart, which offers employee tuition assistance, has also added a new lifelong learning program.

Wal-Mart’s Lifelong Learning Program, a partnership with an online university, allows employees to participate in distance learning opportunities and earn credit for what they learn on the job, a June Money Times article noted. The company decided on online college studies after 72 percent of its 32,000 surveyed employees reported that they preferred online college studies to other options, according to The Money Times article.

Joan Lunden, journalist, author and television host, spoke in May about lifelong learning during a Pennsylvania college commencement speech. “You may think that your education is over, but believe me, the learning continues.” she told college graduates. “That’s what I loved about my job. It nurtures my curiosity, it challenges my ideas, and it constantly exposes me to new ways of thinking.”

College for parents might be easier with online programs that allow them to study at their own pace and place. Parents can continue their work or family demands, such as preparing meals and helping children with homework, scheduling studies while children are at school or after they’re tucked in for the night. There are also many scholarships, fellowships and grants that might help put college for parents within easier financial reach.

The federal government, along with large corporations, non-profit organizations and community and civic groups offer courses online scholarships, fellowships and grants. Some are awarded based on financial need, while others are targeted to specific studies or demographics, such as minorities and women. Many scholarships, fellowships and grants for college require that institutions be accredited. The U.S. Department of Education maintains a list of accredited colleges, universities and career and technical schools and programs on its web site.
