Advertising on the Internet has been popular every since the dawning of the World Wide Web . Corporations and businesses of all sizes, use the internet to advertise on and nearly any webpage you go to will have some type of ad on it. People can use their favorite internet search engine and type in a keyword for what they are looking for and they will find a large selection of different site links from which to choose. This form of advertising has the great advantage of saving both time and money.
Businesses have the advantage of creating their own personalized or branded website, where they can communicate effectively with visitors and provide vast amounts of information on their services. Regular newsletters, offers, discounts can be posted to increase the interest of the website visitors.
However because it is so vast, there are some that abuse the system and misuse this type of marketing avenue. Online business advertisement can either be legally sound or in some cases people get involved in illegal advertising activities. Advertising legally will have sites that use directories, desktop advertising, email advertising or online search engine advertising. However, the illegal form of advertising is often referred to as ’spamming’. This is usually done by altering some system settings with the help of external applications, after which pop-ups are sent to a particular network or computer. These are known as adware and spyware software programs. Some of these are really harmful, the most famous being Trojans, which are very hard to uninstall and remove from the system.
Advertising on the internet is a lucrative business, as technology grows at a rapid pace and online advertisements are becoming very eye catching. Marketers use bright colors, trendy designs, attention grabbers and any number of things to catch your attention. The most popular tool for designing advertisements is Adobe Flash. Various types of Adobe Flash are available to help you in designing your business advertisements; such as Vista, Flashplayer and Plugin.
Banner ads are animations displayed on the website usually created in HTML or Eudora. There is a range of type and sizes of the ads. Trick banner ads are banner ads that have an extra functionality of dialog boxes and buttons that are displayed as an alert or error message.
A pop-up is an advertisement displayed in a new window that covers-up part of the active web page. Ads that open beneath the active web page are called ’pop-under advertisements’ and these will typically come up as soon as the present window is minimized or closed.
Interstitial ads are those that are displayed before directing over to the desired page.
Wallpaper ads form the background of the web page.
The ads that float on the screen are known as a floating ad.
Using video advertisements is a very popular way to promote your product on the internet.
There are many ways by which advertising slots can be purchased on the Internet like CPM, CPV, CPC, CPA, CPL and CPO. CPM or cost per mil means that the advertiser is meant to pay for a particular number of people to whom the advertisement will be exposed. CPV or cost per visitor means that the advertiser is meant to pay for the people to whom the advertisement was delivered. CPC is next; which stands for ’cost per click’ and that is when you get paid for the number of times visitors will click on the advertisements. Keep in mind however, that visitors will have to click on the advertisement link before you generate any money from this. Next is CPA; ’cost per action’ and this is when the ad publisher covers all charges of the advertisement, but you only get paid each time a visitor click on the ad and then purchases something or joins a membership. CPL stands for; ’cost per lead’ and this is similar to ’cost per action’, but the visitor does not have to really buy anything, they can just sign on for a one time special offer or monthly newsletter. Lastly is CPO or cost per order, this is where the advertiser pays each time an order is placed.
Using online advertisements can be used for a number of things other than promoting a product or business, in fact, many people use them for promoting non-profit organizations and even use it as a means of increasing education awareness.
